Energy Star Ratings
Sooner or later, we all need to replace an appliance, upgrade electronic equipment or start a home improvement project. Carefully choosing has become even more important now than ever. Make sure that you look for products that have been rated and have earned the ENERGY STAR rating. While some people think that Energy Star is a brand, it is actually a program which is backed by the Federal Government. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE) team up to back improvements in manufacturing and technology. What began in 1992 as a voluntary labelling system for computers and monitors has expanded into 50 categories including appliances, lighting, heating and cooling, home envelope (insulation, windows, roofing, etc.), office equipment and a large range of commercial products. The Energy Star program funds rebates, tax credits and research and has been the driving force behind many energy related innovations. Through it's combined efforts in private and public organizations, the ENERGY STAR program managed to deliver approximately $16 billion in saving in 2007 and saved enough energy to power 10 million homes. They helped to reduce greenhouse gas emmissions from 12 million cars. When you begin your search for a new product, take a minute to stop by the ENERGY STAR website. You can find such valuable information as what products are available, locate a store near you or find out about rebates. You can also find answers to over 275 questions about energy efficient products and information about tax credits. A tax credit can provide significant savings. It reduces the amount of income tax you have to pay. Unlike a deduction, which reduces the amount of income subject to tax, a tax credit directly reduces the tax itself. You should refer to the final Internal Revenue Service (IRS) rules to determine what items qualify for tax credits. Some ENERGY STAR products cost more for the initial purchase, however, all deliver significant savings on energy usage and can provide a yearly savings of up to 30%. As energy costs continue to soar upward, any difference in cost will quickly pay for itself. All of the retailers from the largest appliance chains have products that are Energy Star approved. Whether you are shopping at Lowe's Home Improvements, Sears, Best Buy, Costco or the Home Depot, you will find a great selection of energy star rated options.
