Pros and Cons Of Owning a Newfoundland Retreiver
A first encounter with a Newfoundland is extremely powerful. Many people are completely captivated by these gentle giants and have an overwhelming urge to own one. But these enormous slobbering bears are not for everyone! While any Newfoundland owner will tell you that their gentleness, lovability and natural beauty far outweigh any inconvenience that you might have to endure, their drawbacks are beyond the tolerance level of many people. Pros: Newfoundlands are incredibly loyal dogs, who would rather be at their owners side than anywhere in the world. Extended absence from their family is pure torture. Newfoundlands are extremely protective without being aggressive, particularly of children. Of the two Newfs I have owned, neither would ever let any harm befall either of my daughters. I have never seen either of them go after anybody, but they simply do not let anyone near their children. Newfoundlands are surprisingly gentle despite their massive size. They do not grab things, even food, from your hand. They seem to have an instinct to tone down their behavior when around very small children. Newfoundlands are extremely tolerant of just about everything. They are seldom annoyed and I have never seen one snap. They can tolerate the tugging of even the smallest of children. My first Newfoundland was with us for over eight years and the only time I ever heard him growl was when my daughter was standing on his ear. Newfoundlands are very intelligent. They are very easily trained and can actually figure things out on their own. This can also be a drawback, as it makes them excellent escape artists. Newfoundlands are absolutely beautiful animals. Their physical appearance and surprising grace make them a joy to see and be around. Cons: Newfoundlands are incredibly huge. While this is the thing that attracts people, it is not always easy to live with. It is like living with a gigantic five year old. Child-proofing your house is always possible. Newfie-proofing your house is not quite so easy. Newfoundlands shed like crazy. All the time. Not twice a year, but every day. Every morning, there is a huge pile of hair. It rolls around the house like tumbleweeds. Newfoundlands drool. A lot. A tendency to shake their heads sends long strings of drool on everything. This drool has the peculiar tendency to be clear when is wet, but black when it is dry. You know that you truly love your Newfoundland when you are standing on a chair, yet again, cleaning drool off the ceiling. Newfoundlands are not good watch dogs. While they would never allow anyone to harm their family, they would never protect their property. A burglar is an opportunity to meet a new person. In short, you need to carefully consider whether or not a Newfoundland is right for you. Clean-freaks will be driven to a nervous breakdown by these giant, drooling fur balls. Someone who is in search of a watch-dog should probably look for another breed. If you have a house full of priceless antiques, get a Lhasa Apso. |

Beautiful dogs! Much too big for my small place, unfortunately. :)
It sounds like a great dog for someone with a large space in a rural environment.
They are magnificent animals! But they would only be good pets for certain people and need lots of room and attention! Good article!
